First day of work - Jan. 2nd

I hate starting a new job.

Hate, hate, hate it.

Who do you eat lunch with? What do you wear? Do you bust out your best friend picture mug for your coffee? Can you wear your Uggs into work, or do you need to put your heels on outside? Will you boss remember you’re starting? Will they give you work to do? Will it be OKAY!?

Hope that gives you a little snippet of my thoughts.

But, I must say it went fine. I met my manager* at 9am and she got me checked in with a visitor’s pass because you need a badge to get into the building. Staffing is very secure and confidential, ya know.
I met the whole team**, found my seat and took care of a couple things I needed intranet for. The seat is a pretty standard cubicle….yawn…but when you stand up you can see the river and its beautiful.

My manager and I then grabbed some coffee and she filled me in on a couple more tid bits, updates about the team, potential clients, her life etc.

She assigned my first client and I got to work. It’s a large client that utilizes staffing agencies but we’re not currently doing any financial work with them. My task- make a million calls, figure out what’s going on, and set client visits.

After an hour of work I went to lunch with my manager and the other new manager that started that day on the IT side. We went to this somewhat bizarre buffet place, Zeytuna which is actually an awesome lunch spot and I will be returning.

Then it was back to work and cold calling the client. I forgot how painful starting from scratch was…painful but also such a challenge. It is a little nicer this time though because I seem to know (or appear to know) what I’m doing and the calls are much smoother. I just made back-to-back calls until I couldn’t stand it a minute longer, did some research, drank some coffee, called a few more people and then headed out around 7pm.

Mr. Subway popped me right home in a timely 21 minutes and I was done!

*Remember when I mentioned a mentor was the one who had encouraged me to look into this opportunity in the first place? Well…a couple things changed in management and she’s my interim boss. It’s nice to be managed by her but she is one tough cookie.

**The team (15), from what I can tell is really great. They are much less seasoned than my previous team which in staffing can often be a good thing. Everyone is under 30 and has worked in staffing less than 18 months (except for 1 or 2). Everyone is very positive, which is SO important in a sales job.
